A lot of folk say you learn something new everyday. That ain't, as the saying goes, necessarily so, but as it happens I did learn something new today.

Regular readers may already be aware of some of the tiny gems of wisdom dug from the filthy gaping open pit mine that I call my fellow postal workers. My favourite for some time has been evidence relating to the Azaria Chamberlain case, but I feel it's time to move on.

That's right ladies and gentlemen. We have a new champion.

Current affairs is often the topic of the day at the delivery centre and the whole Pope thing has been up there with the best of them. Offered to the group today was the highly disputed historical fact that there may have been a female pope. The history rumour mill has it that she was torn to death after giving birth at an un-popely moment, effectively shattering the myth of papal celibacy.

Pope Joan was her name.

Actually I already knew that bit. What was news to me was that Pope Joan was much more widely known as JOAN OF ARC, for fucks sake. She of the crusades, burnt at the stake and all that.

The bit I'm still not sure about is how many times she seems to have died. Once at the stake, and once at the clawing hands of outraged bishops. Sounds like a bit of miracle to me. I might write to the new pope and have him look into the possibility of a sainthood for her.

Off the top of my head, i think that she might already be a saint. Could be wrong though.

Your workplace never fails to amuse us. However, i doubt that it amuses you quite so much.

She should have tried that 'immaculate conception' line...

That would have been a good start, but then she would have add the ever popular "and I'm not a bloke" line.

Joan of Arc is already a saint.

The Martin of Troppau version of the Popess Joan story has her dying in childbirth, so she didn't have a chance to be torn to death.

Ah, nothing like randomly posting in somebodys' 2 month old post!
